Paranthan Chemicals Company Limited is the pioneer and market leader of Sri Lankan chemical industry. It is self-financing, a profit earning, and a fully State- owned Company, which contributes dividends to General Treasury annually.
The Company is currently functioning under the purview of Ministry of Industry & Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, Co-operative Development and Vocational Training & Skills Development.
Our Heritage
Parantahan Chemical factory was started in 1956 as a Government chemical factory in Paranthan in Kilinochchi District and the main raw material of the chemical production was salt harnessed from the Elephant Pass Salterns. The factory than manufactured 1425 metric tons of Caustic Soda, 900 metric tons of Chlorine, 370 metric tons of Hydrochloric acid, 520 metric tons of Salt, 53 metric tons of Ferric Chloride, 7 metric tons of Zinc Chloride and as per the reports, there were 540 employees were working in the factory.
The factory established after the Independence of Ceylon, it is said that it was one of the largest chemical plants in South Asia during that period. The factory supplied chemicals, which was used as raw material by many local industries such as manufacturing of paper, steel, soaps and detergents, rubber based products, textiles, water purification and many other industries thorough which the company has contributed for the upliftment of the industrial development of the Nation.
Then, Paranthan Chemicals Company Limited was incorporated on 17.01.1991 as a Public Limited Liability Company under the conversion of Public Corporation or Government Owned Business Undertaking into Public Companies Act No. 13 of 1987 to carry on the business that was carried out by Paranthan Chemicals Corporation, which was originally established in 1955.

Paranthan Chemicals continued its national responsibility of meeting the chemical needs of Sri Lanka through imports.
Paranthan Chemicals Company Limited plays a very significant national role in providing Liquid Chlorine for national water purification by meeting the Chlorine need of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board and thereby contributes on the supply of purified drinking water to the Nation, which is essential for ensuring water safety in Sri Lanka.
The Company readily meets Chlorine requirement of the country and refills Chlorine gas to cylinders of 68 kilograms from 900 kilograms cylinders under strict safety conditions.The Company also supplies Caustic Soda for soap manufacturing and other chemicals required for local manufacturing industries. The Company also manufactures Sodium Hypochlorite and Caustic Liquid as value addition which are used in variety of industries.
The company also conducts training programs on chemical applications and safe handling of Chlorine for customers and users of chemicals.
